In 1978 Dr. René Favaloro entrusted Dr. Horacio Pichel (former Rector of the Favaloro University) the task of organizing the Teaching and Research Department (TRD) of the Favaloro Foundation. His goal was to form a multidisciplinary team, and so he recruited basic science investigators from diverse fields (physicians, biologists, physicists, biochemists, bioengineers, veterinarians). This approach definitely contributed to the scientific development of the institution. The TRD grew and became the Institute for Basic Science Research (IICB), which in a relatively short time gained recognition within the scientific community on account of the numerous papers published in international journals.
In 1992 the University Institute of Biomedical Sciences (IUCB) was launched. In 1997, the IUCB became the Favaloro University, and the IICB remaining within it. In 2009 the Favaloro University underwent an external evaluation carried out by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation. The process comprised three stages: self-evaluation, external evaluation and institutional improvement plan. That extensive and fruitful process permitted us to have new and better laboratories, as well as to increase the number of investigators and PhD students, thus reaching the standards to become an Institute of CONICET (The National Council of Scientific and Technological Investigations). On June 24, 2015, the Board of Directors of CONICET approved the creation of the Institute of Translational Medicine, Transplant and Bioengineering (Spanish acronym: IMETTYB), dependent of the Favaloro University Favaloro and CONICET. En December 2015 the contest to nominate a Director took place, and Dr. Alberto Crottogini, Superior Investigator of CONICET was selected. Finally, on January 1st 2016, the IMETTYB was officially launched.
